NOESIS at the 86th Thessaloniki International Fair
NOESIS, in the context of the presence of the General Secretariat for Research and Innovation (GSRI), under the Ministry of Development and Investments, participates this year in the Thessaloniki International Fair with innovative applications by primary and secondary school students, which were presented at the Student Conference on Informatics, in April 2022*.
At Pavilion 7 of the GSRI, at the stand of the institution, the following works will be presented:
1. “Beach cleaning robot”
From the former student of the 7th High School of Kalamaria and founder of the startup Petko Alexandros. It was presented and awarded at the 14th Student Conference on Informatics.
Description
This Robot provides a solution to the well-known problem of plastic pollution with an autonomous robot that has the ability to collect waste from any outdoor space.
The robot has the ability to identify – through artificial intelligence – the material of each litter and categorize it accordingly. Finally, he can use his arm to collect this waste, depending on its shape.
2. “Other Air” – Automated Air Purification System of School Classrooms
By students of the Experimental School of The Gymnasium of Thessaloniki. It was presented at the 14th Student Conference on Informatics and one of the funders is NOESIS.
Description
Usually the air in the classrooms is very bad, heavy, thick, but open technologies changed it at the Experimental School of the University of Thessaloniki. Students of the Third Gymnasium with the support of their teachers, utilizing Open Technologies, built an effective system for monitoring and improving air quality for the classrooms. Sensors for measuring suspended particles, temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure, window vents, device control system and a Raspberry Pi micro-computer for communication with each other were deployed for the purpose of better natural ventilation of classrooms in the midst of a pandemic, minimization of aerosols and quality improvement of the air, preserving the health of students.
3. “Robotic Warning Mechanism” – Safe Manual Handling of Loads
By students of the 8th Gymnasium and 7th General Lyceum of Kalamaria. It was presented at the 14th Student Conference on Informatics.
Description
The project was carried out using the Lego EV3 set, but the prospect is to use sophisticated motion sensors and electronic textiles (e-textiles). The two constructions made warn the worker who manually moves some load to the two most frequent and dangerous postures: the wrong posture when lifting the load and the rotation of the body trunk holding the load. To detect the wrong stops, distance sensors and gyroscopes are used. They in turn activate audio and virtual messages.
4. “Wedoguard Railroad” Robotic system for guarding level railway crossings
By students of the 11th Primary School of Kalamaria. It was presented at the 14th Student Conference on Informatics.
Description
The iron horse always comes first! In Europe, in 2017 there were 439 collisions at level crossings (75% with a car), making up 25% of major rail incidents, with 282 deaths and 240 serious injuries.
“WeGuard” is a robotic system for guarding level railway crossings consisting of Lego Wedo 2 and micro:bit. During the passage of the train, the protective bar is activated and at the same time a signal is sent to the passing smart cars which are automatically immobilized to avoid an accident even if the driver tries to pass by violating the crossing. The students will construct and program the smart system with the bars (Lego WEDO 2 + micro:bit) as well as an unmanned car (micro:bit) which will be immobilized during the passage of the train.
5. Control and prevention of spoilage with Arduino
By students of the 2nd General Lyceum of Kalamaria.
It was presented at the 14th Student Conference on Informatics.
Description
Spoilage and decomposition of food is a problem that arises due to the ineffective practices and conditions of its storage and transportation over long distances. On the other hand, many foods are wasted or discarded after their expiration date when they could in some cases be consumed. When food is stored, parameters such as its nutritional value, conductivity, odour, temperature and humidity often change, and help monitor its quality. Several foods when overripe or spoiled begin to emit gases, change their color, humidity and temperature, pH or even their conductivity.
This work proposes a system for monitoring specific foods using the Arduino microcontroller, in order to detect possible alterations, measuring with the help of sensors the above data. The data from the measurements are compared in a laboratory measurement database, the condition of the food is assessed, and corresponding actions are suggested.
6. “Thinking City” – The city that thinks ecologically…
By students of the 1st Gymnasium of Pefki.
It was presented at the 14th Student Conference on Informatics.
Description
After being informed about the causes and effects of climate change, we realized that this plight is the fault of man.
We thought of proposing solutions by creating the city that thinks with the aim of raising awareness of citizens on issues related to the environment.
Our city consists of four models. After measuring the temperature, citizens upon entering the city will see a dashboard on which the corresponding LED will be turned on as a sign of heatwave, frost or normal. We added a smart lighting circuit with the aim of saving energy. The lamps in our city will only be lit when it gets dark. In the model forest we built a fire detection circuit. In case of fire, an alarm will ring and a red led will light up.
Finally, our city could not be missing a traffic light for cars and for pedestrians. Pedestrians with reduced or no vision will be alerted through a sound.
