Wheels in orbit I – Cycling between planets! Sunday 22.9.2024

A pioneering action for Greece is co-organized by NOESIS, the Cycling Athletic Club of Thessaloniki (PATH) and the Association of Friends of Astronomy (OFA), under the auspices of the Municipality of Thermi, bridging landmarks and spaces and highlighting them, through sustainable mobility, in another… dimension.
With the slogan “Cycling between the planets!” The cyclists, who will participate in the event, will travel the route from the central square of Thermi to the northern entrance of NOESIS.
Along the route, the Sun and 3 planets of our solar system will be placed as landmarks (in scale): Mercury, Venus and Earth, with the latter located in Thermi Square and the Sun in the sphere of the NOESIS planetarium. The co-organization is implemented based on an idea of PATH and is expected to contribute to the further recognition of the Planetarium as a landmark, as well as to the promotion of both the architectural value of the building and the area of Thermi.
During this special journey between the… planets, cyclists will stop at the intermediate landmarks, so that with the support of OFA they can see the “exhibits” and understand the meaning of their scaled dimension. For the safe conduct of the event, measures will be taken by the Thermi Traffic Police, either to stop the traffic of vehicles at the time of the event, or to escort traffic policemen along the entire length of the route that has been planned.
At the finish point, at NOESIS, there will be bicycles of special interest (mountain, road, electric, etc.), where members of PATH will inform the attendees about the advantages and the correct way to use each model. There will also be a solar telescope for observation. In an adjacent area, a traffic education track will be formed, where representatives of PASTH will offer traffic education lessons to children, but also to older bicycle users. And for space lovers, there will be a lecture, lasting 20′-30′, related to the theme of the event, in a room provided for this purpose by NOESIS.
All participants in the cycling route will have the opportunity to:
for a 50% discount for attending -on the day of the event- a show at NOESIS. The program is addressed to both adults and minors (>8 years old) accompanied by their parents.

Participation in this action is FREE, as it has an educational and cultural character and is offered by the co-organizers to the community, on the occasion of the celebration of Car Free Day in the context of promoting Sustainable Mobility. The event will take place on Sunday, September 22, 2024, starting at 11 a.m. and starting from… Land in Thermi Square and finish at… Sun, in the realm of the Planetarium.
